David Rodkey Albaugh

David Rodkey Albaugh, the eldest son of Samuel and Anna Albaugh, was born November 5, 1829 and died August 27, 1903, aged 73 years, 9 months and 22 days.
He was one of six children of whom Mary Ann, Noah and Frank are still living. Lucy and Susan have been dead for several years. He was reared on the old "Wolf Pen Hill" Farm a few miles southeast of Potsdam and being the eldest son took an active part in clearing the forest and establishing the home so much enjoyed by all members of the family. By taking advantage of the opportunities then offered, upon arriving at his majority he was enabled to teach school several terms.
He spent his entire life as a citizen of Union township. He held a number of offices of trust, one of them being justice of the peace for 15 years. He probably settled more estates than any other citizen of Union township. He was a man a of much more than ordinary judgment. It has been said by those in authority that higher courts never reversed his decisions in cases taken on transcripts form his docket.
He was married to Martha J. Murphey, March 5, 1857. To them were born seven children, of whom five are living. Porter and Harvey having preceded their father.
The highest of his ambition with his family was to have them secure the best education with the means at hand. He made many sacrifices for the welfare of his family and others. He took a great interest in education and all means of elevating mankind. His counsel was much sought by those in trouble or distress and was continuously found helping others less fortunate in life.
About twenty-six yeas ago he united with the Christina Church at Laura, was baptized by Rev. Isaac Waymire, and retained his membership there until the time of his death. He often expressed a desire that all God's people might unite in one common effort for the upbuilding of Christ's kingdom.
During his last illness he was reconciled and submissive to the Master's will, saying, "If this is the way the Master has to bring me nearer to Him it is all right." He was loved most by those who knew him best.
He leaves a wife, five children, two brothers, one sister and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. Funeral services were conducted by Enos Pemberton and Isaac Waymire in the Dunkard church at Postdam.

DAVID R. ALBAUGH, farmer; P.O. West
Milton; born in Montgomery Co., Ohio in the year 1829; is a son of Samuel and Anna M.
Albaugh, who were born in Pennsylvania; they immigrated to Ohio and settled in Montgomery
County in the year 1829, in which they lived two years, then removed to this county and
entered 80 arces of land, which was then - and is yet - known as the Wolf Pen Hill Farm;
this land they cleared up, improved and lived on till their decease. Mr. A. held the
office of Justice of the Peace for about fifteen years; they were the parents of six
children, five of whom are living, viz., Mary A., D., R. Susanna, Noah H. and Benjamin F.
and Lucy, deceased. Our subject was reared on his father's farm, on which he labored till
he was 24 years of age, when he began life for himself. March 15, 1857, he was married to
Martha Murphey; by whom he has had seven children, viz., Laura B., Samuel O., Porter W.,
John B., Harvey H., Charley D., Anna G.; she is the daughter of John W. and Margaret
Murphey, who were born in this county; Mrs. M. died many years ago; he resides with our
subject with whom he has lived for a number of years; Mr Albaugh sttled on the farm where
he now resides in 1863; he owns 80 acres of land, which is in a high state of cultivation;
he has filled the office of Justice of the Peace for three years, and is competent to
discharge its duties; his education was obtained in the common schools, where he fitted
himself for the duties of teaching, which he has followed for a number of terms; his
children, Laura B. and Samuel O. are among the educators of the county, the former having
ten terms, the latter four; his brothers and sisters were also leading teachers and have
taught extensively in the county; he and his wife are exemplary members of the Christian
Church, he having been connected with the above church three years, she for a period of
eighteen years, and was born in this county December 25, 1838.
