Last Will and Testament of
Conrad Slates, deceased

    Be it remembered that on the Twenty second day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine, the last Will and Testament of Conrad Slates was duly admitted to probate by the Probate Court of Carroll County, State of Ohio, to wit:

In the matter of Proving the Last Will and }                Admission of Will & Probate
Testament of Conrad Slates, deceased     }

    On this 22nd day of April A.D. 1869, the last will and testament of Conrad Slates, deceased late of Louden township in this county, bearing date the 17th day of March A.D. 1869, was presented to this Court for probate, and Robert Gibson and William Slates, the subscribing witnesses to said Will, appeared and being duly sworn testified in open court, to the due execution of said Will, which testimony was reduced to writing and by them subscribed and filed with said Will; and it appearing to the Court, that said Will was duly executed and attested, and that the Testator at the time of its execution was of full age, of sound mind and memory and not under any restraint.  It is ordered that said Will be and the same is hereby admitted to probate as and for the last will and testament of the said Conrad Slates, deceased, and that said will together with the Testimony taken in respect to the same and therewith filed be recorded.  Which Will with the testimony taken thereso is in the words and figures following

                                                           The Will

    In the name of the Benevolent father of us all I, Conrad Slates being of sound mind and memory do make this my Last will and testament.
    Item 1st    I give and bequeath to my beloved beloved wife Hannah Slate in lieu of her Dower all my property real and personal situate in Loudon township Carroll Ohio during her natural life to have the full control thereof she and ______ Executor herein after named selling so much of my personal as may be sufficient to pay my just debts & funeral expenses
    Item 2nd   At the decease of my wife the estate aforesaid, I give to my son John W. Slates and his heirs the farm on which he now resides being the South West quarter of section No. one of township thirteen range five containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less he paying six hundred dollars as follows one hundred and fifty dolars a year commencing one year from the death of my wife.
    Item 3rd   I devise and bequeath to my son Solomon Slates and his heirs the farm on which he now resides being the South east quarter of section one township thirteen Range five containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less the said Solomon paying six hundred  in the same manner as John W.
    Item 4th   I give my son Samuel Slates one thousand dollars out the farm ****(Arnolds?)
    Item 5th   To my son Joseph Slates one thousand dollars out the proceeds of the same farm
    Item 6th   I give to my son Harvey(?) Slates one thousand dollars out the proceeds of the same farm
    Item 7th   I give to my daughter Mary A. Hamilton one thousand dollars out of the proceeds of the same farm    ~  the balance of the proceeds of said farm I retain for future disposal
    Item 8th   To each of my daughters Drusilla Hibbs, Catharine Caleb and Leah Albaugh three hundred dollars
    Item 9th   I give to the heirs of my daughter Margaret Burrier, deceased three hundred dollars
    the Legacies ~ the four Last named daughters is to be paid out of the monies Paid by my sons J.W. & S. Slates.
    I hereby constitute and appoint John W. Slates my Executor.  I hereby authorize ___ ___
appoint and settle all my business and receive the monies I have provided and pay the Legacies above named.  I devise that there shall be No appraisement and No sale of my personal property and the Court of Probate Bond omission of the same.  Any money or personal property not disposed of in the foregoing will remaining at the decease of my wife wil be equally divided amongst all my children.  I do hereby revoke all former will made by me.
    On testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of March A.D. 1869.                                                                                                                             Conrad Slates   (seal)

    Signed and acknowledged by said Conrad Slates as his last will and testament in our presences and signed by us in his presence.

    Personally appeared in open court, Robert Gibson and Wiliam Slates, subscribing witnesses to the last will and testament of Conrad Slates, late of said county, deceased, who, being duly sworn according to law **** and say that the foregoing is the last will and testament of said Conrad Slates, deceased, that they subscribed their names thereto as the attesting witnesses at the request of the said Testator and in his presence, and in the presence of each other, and that he signed the same in their presence and acknowledged the same to be his last will and testament; that said testator, at the time of executing the same, was of full age, sound mind and memory, and not under any restraint.
