Appeal To The Public

An Appeal to the Public
Westminster, Carroll, MD - unknown paper & date of

You are well aware of the movement to locate a Y.M.C.A. in Westminster and of a liberal offer of George W. Albaugh of the building known as the Montour House for this purpose.
"It will require at least $8500 to make the necessary repairs and furnish this building for the Y.M.C.A.  This is not a large amount, if everyone will help."
"You all know the need of this association in this community.  The opportunity is now given the people to contribute to this worthy cause."
"We have many churches and Sunday schools; we have excellent public schools  and an institution of higher education, which has carried  the name of Westminster all over the United States and beyond; we have a small public library; most effcient fire department, good water and good light.  Now, let us have a place where our young men can gather in the evening for innocent recreation and improvement or a vacant hour may be spent profitably.  As it is now, they must either walk the streets or go to a saloon if they leave home."
"It is your duty to help to remedy this condition."
"The campaign committee appointed to solicit subscriptions will begin an active campaign on Tuesday, January 5, and propose to have this money subscribed by January 15th."
"You will be handed a subscription blank for your donation to the necessary improvements, also a blank for a yearly subscription of not less than $10 for five years, to be paid only if there is a deficiency in the running expenses of the association.  Both these blanks will be left with you by some member of the committee and you can request this member to call for them, you naming the time.  If it is your desire to hand your subscription to any other member of the committee, you can do so."
"In order to carry out this work as rapidly as possible, the committee requests that the subscriptions he handed in, or a member of the committee would like to call for same, the day following the receipt of the blanks."
"It is hoped that you will give this your earnest thought and consideration."
A general meeting of all the committees will be held in the Wentz build next Monday night.
